Essential Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Would you like to know what lab results mean? DDxHub - Differential Diagnosis Hub helps to understand and explains your blood test.

Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. Essential hypertension means that the cause of high blood pressure is not known. Blood pressure measures the force against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body. Blood pressure readings are usually given as two numbers, for example, 120 over 80 (written as 120-80 mmHg). One or both of these numbers can be too high. The top number is called the systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure. Defined as blood pressure greater than 140-90 mmHg or greater than 130-80 mmHg in patients with renal disease. Typically diagnosed by screening of an asymptomatic individual. Treatment of uncontrolled hypertension reduces the risks of mortality and of cardiac, vascular, renal, or cerebrovascular complications. Lifestyle changes are recommended for all patients: weight loss, exercise, decreased sodium intake, and moderation of alcohol consumption. Choice of drug therapy is often driven by considerations related to comorbid disease, but achievement of blood pressure goal supersedes choice of therapeutic agents.
